Purpose of the role

The Finance Director position at Fuel Card Services is an instrumental role in the Senior Management team at FCS and is pivotal in driving operational excellence and sustaining profitable growth in a dynamic, commercially focused environment. Leading the Finance & Credit teams, comprising approximately 40 professionals across multiple offices the Finance Director will play a crucial role in enhancing business efficiencies, advancing customer service offerings, and fostering innovation within the company's entrepreneurial culture.

 

Key responsibilities

Business Strategy:

  • Collaborate closely with the MD and Senior Management to develop and execute strategies for profitable growth, including sales expansion, margin improvement, effective cash flow management, and diversified revenue streams.
  • Ensure the business maintains a strong return on capital through strategic evaluation of acquisition opportunities and initiatives to optimize investment returns, ensuring continued financial viability and stakeholder value.
  • Collaborate with the board to evolve Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to optimize sales capacity across the entire business.

Development:

  • Support the identification, acquisition, and integration of bolt-on acquisitions across the UK in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Drive optimal integration synergies across all business areas, including sales processes and system integrations.

Leadership:

  • Lead and develop the finance team to enhance their capabilities and promote high performance and stability.
  • Foster a customer-focused culture across the business in collaboration with senior management.
  • Continuously improve skills and capabilities within the finance team to support organizational goals.

Operational Finance:

  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting to senior management and DCC stakeholders.
  • Implement best-in-class financial systems and processes to support operational and strategic development.
  • Establish and maintain effective financial controls to support organizational scale and growth.
  • Develop the finance function's organizational structure to meet business needs effectively.

Commercial Finance:

  • Drive profitability through organic growth and contribute to overall business success.
  • Collaborate with sales and commercial departments to set financial priorities and manage margins effectively.
  • Lead efforts to improve operational efficiency and cost control.
  • Optimize Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) by managing working capital efficiently.
  • Negotiate contracts and lines of credit with major suppliers to enhance financial flexibility.
  • Lead the annual budget process to drive business transformation and renewal.
  • Manage cash flow and ensure effective cash management practices are in place.

Compliance and Regulatory:

  • Manage all aspects of compliance, including financial, regulatory, commercial, and tax requirements.
  • Oversee the annual audit process to ensure regulatory compliance and financial transparency.
  • Responsible for tax, treasury, banking, company secretarial, payroll, and pension matters.
  • Assume the role of Senior Accounting Officer, ensuring adherence to accounting standards and regulations.

Risk Management:

  • Implement robust risk management processes to identify, assess, and mitigate financial risks, ensuring the company's stability and resilience in the face of market fluctuations, regulatory changes, and other uncertainties.

 

The Candidate

  • Experienced Finance professional with a strong academic background and proven track record in competitive sales, marketing, and distribution environments, ideally within a multi-site setting ideally with knowledge of Energy Transition.
  • Exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills, capable of quickly collaborating effectively with senior executives.
  • Extensive experience in substantial-scale businesses, preferably within a plc environment, with expertise in margin management, working capital, and ROCE dynamics.
  • Strong commercial acumen, able to contribute directly to overall business strategy and address functional commercial issues.
  • Demonstrate confidence and resilience to effectively challenge and question others in a constructive manner, fostering a culture of critical thinking and continuous improvement.
  • Negotiation skills with a comprehensive understanding of sales and distribution components.
  • Successful in change management, acquisitions, and business integration, including people, SAP systems, and processes, with additional understanding of energy distribution businesses.
  • Proven track record in leading, developing, and motivating teams, with adaptability and willingness to work collaboratively to achieve results.
  • Demonstrates passion, commitment, and high personal integrity, with a practical, pragmatic approach and flexibility required for the role.
  • Effective in tight budget environments, utilising KPIs to demonstrate campaign and spend effectiveness, with a relentless focus on achieving results.
