Axiom manages a diverse global network of legal professionals that are matched to engagements with Axiom’s prestigious clients using a bespoke technology platform. While Axiom has made progress to automate this matchmaking process using machine learning, the vast majority of matches are still made manually by Axiom staff.
Axiom is ready to transition from manual to automated matchmaking by pioneering technologies within the machine learning space. Using NLP and other data extraction, Axiom seeks to build out the capability to identify the best talent for roles at the right time. Pulling information out of the vast database of Talent and Client preferences, Axiom believes it can provide best in class experiences to the broad Axiom Talent Network.
To enable this transformation, Axiom’s Research & Development department is adding to our newly formed Data Science team. This is your opportunity to join early stages of Axiom’s data science journey and help chart the course of Axiom’s future.
About the role:
The data science function within Axiom R&D is new, but with big eyes. A dedicated team focused on solving the deeper questions, the pod currently has a Sr Data Scientist, Data Engineer, and is joined by a science focused Product Manager from the Product team.
Axiom is looking for an Associate Data Engineer to work closely with the Science team to ensure the right information is in the right place, at the right time. Working within the R&D data as well as the broader information across the rest of Axiom, this role will be responsible to help find and transform what is needed to successfully execute our long range machine learning programs.
As an Associate Data Engineer, you should be an familiar with data warehousing technical components (e.g. Data Modeling, ETL and Reporting). You should knowledge of architecture for data warehouse solutions and exposure to integrating with SaaS reporting platforms. You should be familiar in the design, creation, management, and business use of large datasets.
The individual is expected to be able to build efficient, flexible, extensible, and scalable ETL and reporting solutions. You should be enthusiastic about learning new technologies and be able to implement solutions using them to provide new functionality to the users or to scale the existing platform. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required as the person will work very closely with diverse teams.
Having strong analytical skills is a plus. Above all, you should be passionate about working with data and someone who loves to enable business teams with data to answer critical questions and drive change.
A successful candidate will have a passion for clarity, be a self-starter comfortable with ambiguity, have strong attention to detail, be able to work in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment and be driven by a desire to innovate. Given the complex nature of the questions we are working on, the ideal candidate will be relentlessly curious and be able to/be interested in having the business conversation underlying the data.
Specifically, this role will:
- Interface with customers, gathering requirements and delivering data solutions.
- Model data and metadata to support reporting and modeling.
- Recognize and adopt best practices in reporting and analysis: data integrity, test design, analysis, validation, and documentation.
- Tune application and query performance using the best available tools.
- Analyze and solve problems at their root, and be willing to step back to understand the broader context.
- Triage many possible courses of action in a high-ambiguity environment, making use of both quantitative analysis and business judgment.
About you:
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
- 2+ years of experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar role
- 2+ years of SQL development experience
- 1+ years of experience in data modeling, ETL, and Data Warehousing
- 1+ years of experience with AWS technologies such as Redshift, RDS, EMR, etc.
- Experience in at least one business intelligence reporting tool (e.g., Tableau, Quicksight, Qlikview)
- Basic DBA tasks
- High technical acumen and ability to communicate effectively with a variety of technical stakeholders
- Self-starter with strong sense of ownership, drive for results, and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ years of Python scripting (or other platform-agnostic language)
- Capable of data processing and transference outside of ETL tools or databases (custom scripts to pull and load from APIs or Files)
- Exposure to AWS big data processing technologies (S3, Sagemaker, Redshift, EMR, Spark)
- Knowledge of software engineering best practices across the development lifecycle, including agile methodologies, coding standards, code review, source management, build processes, testing, and operations
- Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, and gitlab
