R&D Tax Technical Consultant, Sustainable Workspaces/Ventures

This is a new, pivotal role at Sustainable Ventures supporting clients with their R&D tax report submissions by converting the intricacies of cutting-edge climate technological advances into compelling R&D tax reports in accordance with HMRC’s guidelines.

You will work closely with the founders, CFOs and CTOs of companies at the forefront of solving the climate crisis through innovative technological developments. As Sustainable Ventures is home to the largest cluster of climate tech companies in Europe, your role will directly contribute to the growth of these important businesses and technologies. You will support a range of sector verticals, from EV software, innovative materials technology in fashion and building insulation, smart brick ventilation technology, and various novel carbon sequestration developments.  

The Role 

/ Key responsibilities:

• Gather and review clients’ technical data from diverse sources, including grant applications, patents, slide decks, and protect write-ups, to extract critical data and insights to build the R&D technical narrative. 
• Develop and write compelling R&D tax claim reports in line with HMRC’s R&D tax relief guidelines & legislation, working closely with CTOs and other technical contacts.
• Handle all related HMRC and client admin, including preparing and filing AIFs, preparing Final Claims Reports and setting up kick-off meetings.
• Deliver high-quality work within critical deadlines to ensure claim success and a consistent and reliable client service.
• Support the broader R&D tax and commercial team to maintain strong client relationships within the climate tech ecosystem and identify opportunities for new business growth.  
• As initiatives increase across the R&D Tax Team, you will also take responsibility for some clients, managing their needs end-to-end.

Requirements

/ We expect you to have

Ideally, you will have a background in science and technology, an interest in climate and sustainable solutions, a good working knowledge of the R&D tax credit schemes, and a talent for simplifying complex information. 

• A passion for supporting sustainable, impact-focused science and tech startups. 
• An understanding and demonstrable interest in the field of climate technology. 
• Good working knowledge of R&D tax legislation and its application to sustainable innovations, with the ability to grasp technical concepts quickly
• Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills. 
• Excellent communication and report-writing skills, with the ability to explain complex legislation to tech innovators who may have no prior experience with R&D tax. 
• Excellent organisational skills, with great attention to detail and diligence. 
• Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

/ Desirable

• At least two years’ R&D tax experience and sound knowledge of the tax credit scheme. 
• STEM degree/PhD/qualifications with a tech/engineering background or equivalent work experience. 
• Experience of working in the tech, science, or AI field with start-ups and scale-ups.
• Experience in handling HMRC enquiries/compliance checks.
