Summary:
The process Development Technician/ Machinist performs tasks associated with machining prototype & automation production tooling and participates in test assignments to determine processing specifications for related tooling. Works in a highly dynamic environment to create and test new tooling and production processes for existing production platforms and new products coming to market. This role will fabricate new tooling and fixtures to prepare and operate manual and semi-automated heat sealing equipment, complete experiments, collect and log data from instrumentation and observation for analysis. This position works closely with department managers, engineers and other technicians to plan, coordinate and execute assigned projects.
Responsibilities:
Work with Engineering design teams to assess and develop new tooling and processes for production feasibility
Utilize shop machining equipment (CNC/Lathe/TRAK Mill/ WEDM etc.) to program and fabricate tooling assemblies, fixtures and other components
Operate lab scale production automation equipment to product and test new product designs, materials, and tooling primarily heat sealing components to films
Coordinate and complete test assignments on experimental work
Performs measurements of products, tooling and fixturing using precision equipment (e.g. Smartscopes, Optical Comparator, gages, and other test and measurement equipment).
Collects and logs data from test setup for engineers to include in reports
Responsible for maintenance and utilization of shop equipment, tools and instruments
Maintains safe working conditions and methods in the shop/lab area
Performs other duties as assigned by department management
Essential Functions of the Role:
Read/edit/create models and/or drawings in CAD (SolidWorks)
Ability to program and operate shop equipment such as CNC, Lathe, TRAK, WEDM machines
Ability to make precise parts and fixtures, including surface finishes
Knowledge of metallurgy and machining with common tooling and prototyping material stock
Ability to work independently and in a team setting
Desire to find root cause and strong problem solving abilities
Prolonged sitting and standing
Verbal communication – both speaking and listening Functional familiarity with standard PCs and MS Office
Climbing and Bending
Lifting (up to 50 pounds)
Working hours and conditions: Monday – Friday, start time between 6-8 AM CT, 100% on-site
Work Experience Requirements:
Number of overall years necessary: 5-10+ years
Understanding of film/plastic heat sealing tooling and equipment operation strongly desired
Understanding or desire to learn automation equipment mechanics/sensor systems/controls
5+ years experience in tool and die making in a production environment, emphasis on new tool development (metals and plastics component machining)
Journeyman/tool and die maker experience
Experience making tooling for medical device manufacturer, manufacturing production floor experience, ability/desire to do root cause failure analysis and develop tooling improvements desired
Education Requirements:
High School Diploma or equivalent GED required
Specialized Skills/Technical Knowledge:

Ability to make precise parts and fixtures, including surface finishes

Experience operating production web handling and/or heat sealing equipment strongly preferred
Desire to find root cause with strong problem solving abilities
Ability to work independently and in a team setting
